Maomao, the daughter of an apothecary, was torn from her peaceful life and sold from the lowest levels of the imperial court. Now, simply a maid, Maomao is settling in her new worldly life and hides her vast knowledge of medicine in order to avoid any unwanted attention.
Shortly after Maomao’s arrival, the Emperor’s young children inexplicably begin to feel serious symptoms – almost as if a curse had been sunk. The curious Maomao easily solves the mystery and, to stay out of the spotlight, tries to leave anonymous advice. Unfortunately, the dashing and perceptual eunuch Jinshi sees through it and manages to eliminate it.
In recognition of his talent, Maomao is promoted to Lady-En waiting for the favorite concubine of the emperor, Gyokuyou. While Maomao continues to remedy the many diseases distressing the imperial court, its pharmaceutical expertise is quickly essential.
